ODU Rolls Past Towson, 80-57 Behind Bazemore And Hassell

NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University had five players score double-digits to lead the Monarchs to an 80-57 win over Towson Saturday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center. ODU's basketball alumni were honored at halftime in front of another outstanding home crowd of 8,181 which was the sixth crowd of over 8,000 this season.

The Monarchs scored 46 second half points to pull away after a seven-point halftime lead.

ODU built a 14-point lead on a pair of free throws from Frank Hassell, but Towson cut the lead to 10 on a three-pointer from Josh Brown.

The Monarchs responded with an 11-2 run capped by a layup from Keyon Carter.

Towson was able to get the lead down to 13, but that was as close as they would get as ODU finished the game on a 13-2 stretch.

Hassell set the tone for the Monarchs early, scoring their first eight points of the game. He finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for his seventh double-double of the season. For the week, Hassell averaged 18.7 points, 9.0 rebounds and hit .588 (20-34) from the floor. He also hit (16-17) .941 from the free throw line.

ODU broke the Constant Center record for shooting percentage and shot a season-best 62.7 percent from the field. Towson shot .479 (23-48) from the field. The Monarchs hit .600 (9-15) from three point range as Bazemore was three-for-four, Finney three-for five and Trian Iliadis hit three-of-four.

Kent Bazemore led the Monarchs with 17 points and also added five boards, six assists and two steals.

Keyon Carter added 13 points while Ben Finney and Trian Iliadis each chipped in 11.

Brown led the Tigers with 19 points shooting 5-of-6 from behind the arc.Brian Morris dished out six assists.

ODU dominated the boards again, 33-12. Joining Hassell was Chris Cooper who hauled down eight boards. ODU also had nine steals led by Finney with three. The 12 rebounds by Towson is a new ODU opponent low. The previous low was 14 by JMU on Jan.14, 1986.

The Monarchs return to action on Wednesday night when they host the Fightin'Blue Hens of Delaware in a 7 p.m. contest. ODU will learn its BracketBuster opponent Monday night when the pairings are released at 6:30 p.m. on ESPNU.
