Maryland Hands Field Hockey 6-0 Loss

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion field hockey team suffered its first loss of the season as the University of Maryland took the first meeting in the home-and-home series, 6-0, at the Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex on Saturday afternoon in College Park, Md. The Terrapins' six goals were the most in the series with the Lady Monarchs. Old Dominion fell to 1-1 on the young season, while Maryland upped its mark to 3-0. Maryland's defense clamped down on the Lady Monarch offense allowing just three shots on net, all coming in the second half of play. Meanwhile, the Terp offense managed a staggering 27 shots on the ODU net. The Terps held just a 1-0 advantage at the half. Jackie Ciconte, off a feed from Paula Infante, gave Maryland the lead eight minutes into the game. Maryland rattled off five goals in the second half. Sara Silvetti scored twice along with Infante, Anja Boettcher, and Lauren Foundos. Old Dominion keeper Mary Cate Gordon (Oreland, Pa.) made seven stops in the cage. Maryland's Christina Restivo had one stop in the shutout. The Lady Monarch and Terrapins will meet again at Foreman Field on Friday, October 15th at 6:00 p.m. The Old Dominion field hockey team will return to action next weekend continuing its opening road trip. The Lady Monarchs face Michigan on Saturday, September 11th at 1:00 p.m. and then face Syracuse on Sunday, September 12th at 2:00 p.m. on the Wolverines turf for a neutral site meeting.
