FAIRFAX, VA (February 24, 2000) -- Old Dominion's wrestling team rallied from a 22-6 deficit but fell just short in their effort to topple CAA-rival George Mason, losing 19-22. Old Dominion finishes its season with a 5-6 overall record, 2-2 in the CAA as GMU improved to 6-5 overall, 3-1 in the CAA.

Old Dominion sophomore Brad Krepps (Dauberville, PA) notched his first CAA victory of the year to start the night for the Monarchs at 197 pounds. Monarch junior Leevi MacDonald (Norfolk, VA) was pinned at heavyweight before senior Chip Reyes (Virginia Beach, VA) topped GMU's Donnie Pereira, 10-5, at 125, to tie the score at 6-6. The win was Reyes' seventh in a row as he finished the CAA season undefeated.

Meanwhile, GMU won the next three weight classes (133-149) to move ahead 22-6. However, at 157, freshman Jake Cairns (Brick, NJ) earned a sudden-death win over George Mason's Jason Grant to cut the lead to 22-9. At 165, Old Dominion sophomore Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA), ranked #14 in the nation, topped GMU's Gabe Higley, 10-7, to make the score 22-12. The win was Rusak's 31st of the year as he improved his career dual meet record to 28-0.

Sophomore George Sable (Middle Island, NY) and senior Chris Harrington (N. Ft. Myers, FL) then each won their third CAA matches of the year, with decisions at 174 and 184 respectively, but it was not enough as GMU hung on to edge ODU, 22-19.

Old Dominion will return to action on Saturday, March 4, as they return to Fairfax, VA, to compete in the CAA Championships.
