NORFOLK, Va. – In a game that featured six ties and three lead changes, the Old Dominion University Lacrosse team was unable to get past Towson on Sunday afternoon at the Powhatan Sports Complex as they dropped a late decision, 9-7.

Neither team managed to get in front of the other by more than one goal until just over seven minutes remaining in the game when Towson (9-3, 3-0) took a two-goal advantage that Old Dominion (4-9, 1-2) was not able to overcome despite outshooting the Tigers, 23-19. ODU also held the advantage in groundballs, 14-11, while TU doubled up the Lady Monarchs in draw controls, 12-6.

A defensive first half saw both teams score four times as Towson struck first just three minutes into the game. Over 15 minutes then passed before ODU tied it up on a goal from senior midfielder Lisa Bernardini, who scored for the 12th time in 13 games this season. The teams then traded goals with sophomore midfielder Emily Austerberry scoring twice and senior midfielder Rebecca Hartrum also netting a goal. Hartrum’s goal gave ODU their first lead of the game with four minutes left in the opening half, but Towson was able to find the equalizer just 30 seconds later to knot the game at 4-4 at halftime.

Hartrum scored her second goal of the game eight minutes into the second half to give ODU back the lead but a pair of Towson goals then gave the Tigers back the advantage with under 20 minutes to play. Austerberry’s third goal of the day would knot things back up at 6-6 midway through the second period before TU was able to string together back-to-back goals with under 10 minutes to play to take a two-goal lead.

With just under four minutes to play, senior attacker Rebecca Reymann cut the deficit to 8-7 with a sweeping goal across the middle but Towson bumped the lead back up to two goals just 45 seconds later and held the Lady Monarchs out of the goal for the remainder of the contest to secure the 9-7 victory.

Austerberry led ODU with a hat trick while Hartrum added a pair of goals and an assist to lead ODU. Senior goalie Sarah Geary picked up six saves and caused a turnover. For Towson, sophomore attacker Andi Raymond netted four goals to lead the offense while Mary Teeters picked up six saves for the Tigers in goal.

ODU hits the road for three of their last four regular season contests beginning on Friday when they travel to Fairfax to take on George Mason at 7 p.m. at GMU Stadium. Live stats will be available in addition to updates on Twitter at @ODULacrosse.
