Nov. 25, 2003
NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - Monique Coker had 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Old Dominion to a 75-68 victory Tuesday night over seventh-ranked Penn State.
Coker was 10-for-13 from the field, and Old Dominion (2-2) held leading Penn State scorer Kelly Mazzante to 14 points. Jess Strom and Reicina Russell paced the Lady Lions (1-1) with 17 points each.
Trailing much of the game, Penn State pulled to 69-64 after Jessica Brungo and Mazzante scored consecutive 3-pointers with just over one minute left. But Old Dominion hit six of eight foul shots down the stretch to secure the win.
The Lady Monarchs pulled away earlier in the second half, scoring nine straight points in just over a minute to make it 61-46 with 7:13 remaining. It was Old Dominion's largest lead of the game. Coker had a 3-pointer and a putback underneath during the spurt.
Penn State, normally a good 3-point shooting team, struggled from behind the arc, making six of 20. Old Dominion's pesky defense also came up with eight steals and harassed the Lady Lions into committing 16 turnovers.
The Lady Monarchs opened a nine-point lead early in the first half, when Myriah Spence's 3-pointer capped a 10-0 run to make it 16-7 with 13:29 to go. ODU led 38-27 at the half.
