Four Monarchs Named to VaSID All-State Wrestling Team

LYNCHBURG, Va.  Four members of the nationally-ranked Old Dominion University wrestling team were named to the 2012 Virginia Sports Information Director’s (VaSID) All-State teams on Thursday. Seniors Te Edwards and Joe Budi along with redshirt sophomore John Nicholson were named to the first team, while redshirt sophomore Justin LaValle garnered second team accolades.

Edwards (Virginia Beach, Va./Frank W. Cox) earned the No. 10 seed at the 2012 NCAA Championships after going 21-5 on the season and qualifying for the NCAA Championships for the second time in his career. The 174-pounder won the CAA Tournament title and had three major decisions, a tech fall and three falls on the season. In addition, Edwards racked up a team-high eight wins over NCAA qualifiers and was named the CAA Wrestler of the Month in November.

Budi (Appleton, Wis./Kaukauna) earned his first trip to the NCAA Championships in his final season at ODU after racking up over 85 career wins in four years. He placed third at the CAA Tournament at 197 pounds while picking up two major decisions, a tech fall and two falls on the season. Budi went 5-1 in CAA dual action, picked up two wins over NCAA qualifiers on the year and won the Hokie Open back in November while recording a season record of 22-14.

Nicholson (Des Moines, Iowa/Theodore Roosevelt) placed second at the CAA Tournament and qualified for the NCAA Championships where he picked up a win. The 157-pounder was tied for the team lead in wins, going 27-8, and was fourth in the NCAA (Division I) with a team-leading 13 major decisions. Going 4-1 in CAA action in the regular season, he tallied four technical falls on the year and defeated three NCAA qualifiers. Nicholson also earned CAA Wrestler of the Week honors in consecutive weeks in late January (Jan. 17 and Jan. 24).

LaValle (Apple Valley, Minn./Apple Valley) made his first appearance at the NCAA Championships after finishing second at the CAA Tournament. Going 27-16, he was tied for the team lead in wins while registering three technical falls and four major decisions on the year. LaValle went 2-2 at the NCAA Championships including an upset of 11th-seeded Matt Mariacher of American University in the opening round as he advanced the furthest of any Monarch in this year’s tournament. In addition the 141-pounder, won the Cleveland State Open title, placed fourth at the Hokie Open and took fifth at the prestigious Southern Scuffle while recording three wins over NCAA qualifiers during the year.

Virginia led the VaSID All-State team selections, claiming six total representatives, while Virginia Tech followed with five.  Old Dominion, Virginia and Virginia Tech each placed three on the first team listing.

Old Dominion totaled four selections, while the Apprentice School followed with three representatives and VMI with one honoree. The VaSID wrestling teams include wrestlers from the Division I, Division III and NAIA ranks.
