Anna Tunnicliffe, a former three-time All-American sailor at Old Dominion University, along with four other teammates will represent the United States in the 2005 World University Games

The assembled sailing team from the U.S. and coach Gary Bodie (Hampton, VA), a former ODU sailing coach, will travel to Izmir, Turkey for the event, held August 11-21. The U.S. will be represented by a total of four sailors in two Olympic classes: the Laser class, sailing a single-handed boat for men, and the Laser Radial class, a single-handed boat for women. The other sailors named to the 2005 U.S. World University Games Team are Andrew Campbell (San Diego, CA), Brendan Fahey (Kingston, WA), and Jennifer Gervais (Charleston, SC).

Organized every two years by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), the World University Games bring together thousands of top-level collegiate athletes from around the world to compete in at least 10 sports. This year, 15 sports will participate in the event, marking the second time that sailing is part of the Summer World University Games since FISU organized the first Games in 1959. USA sailors won a bronze medal at the 1998 Summer World University Games when they were held in Palma, Spain.

Tunnicliffe, a recent graduate from ODU with a bachelor's degree in accounting and decision science, is a current member of the U.S. Sailing Team. During her career at ODU she received many sailing honors. She is the only collegiate sailor to win three straight Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Women's Single-handed National Championships. She also placed fourth in the Europe Class division of the U.S. Olympic Trials, making the U.S. National Team. The Old Dominion University Alumni Association named Tunnicliffe Female Athlete of the Year. She was also awarded the Tom Scott Award from the Norfolk Sports Club, an award given annually to the top senior athlete at ODU. She also repeated as the Portsmouth Sports Club's Female Collegiate Athlete of the Year in Virginia.
