Feb. 5, 2008
NORFOLK, Va. -- After a pair of victories for each grappler, two ODU Monarchs were honored by the conference office this week. Sophomore Jesse Strawn was named Co-Wrestler of the Week and redshirt freshman James Nicholson was named Co-Rookie of the Week. It is the first honor of the season for Strawn and the third time this season Nicholson has been named Rookie of the Week. The Monarchs improved to 15-3 overall and 5-1 in the CAA with the aid of Strawn and Nicholson's wins.
Strawn (Holton, Kansas) won both of his matches by fall on Sunday, including a CAA victory over George Mason. The second, a pin over American's Andy Semple, clinched the victory for Old Dominion. The win was the 15th on the season for ODU, the most since 1983-84. He shared the weekly award with Binghamton's Kyle Fried.
Nicholson (Des Moines, Iowa) also earned two victories on Sunday in dual competition. He earned a 20-5 technical fall over George Mason's Brian Wright for his fifth CAA victory this season. Nicholson, ranked as high as 12th in the nation, has won 18 of his last 20 bouts with the only two losses coming to ranked opponents. The rookie shared the award with Frankie McLaughlin of George Mason.
ODU will host their final home dual of the season on Sunday, February 10 as they entertain Rider in CAA action. It will be the first ever CAA dual in the Ted Constant Convocation Center with a start time set for 5:00 pm. Admission is free to students, $6 for adults, and $4 for children, seniors, faculty/staff and military personnel.
