Van Der Merwe's All-American Championship Run Ends In Quarterfinals

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Old Dominion's senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) ended his run at the 2004 Icy Hot/ITA All-American Championship in the quarterfinal round of the men's main draw singles bracket. Van der Merwe fell to Louisiana State's Ken Skupski in two hard fought sets, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
Van der Merwe, ranked ninth in the Preseason ITA Poll and seeded fifth in the tournament, had opened tournament play with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Evghenii Corduneau of Louisiana-Laffayette in the Round of 64. In the next round, the Round of 32, the Monarchs' top singles player played to a 1-6, 6-4, 7-6 (0) win over Federico Ueltschi of Montana State. His three-set 7-6 (5), 2-6, 6-4, win over Alberto Francis of UCLA put van der Merwe into the quarterfinals where his run ended to Skupski, who was seeded ninth in the tournament and ranked 18th in the Preseason ITA Poll.
