NORFOLK, VA -- In Old Dominion's final preseason tune-up, the Lady Monarchs looked ready and poised to take on the 2007 regular season. In an exhibition against the D-III Marlins of Virginia Wesleyan ODU maintained possession for the majority of the match and scored three goals on three assists. Senior Lisa McKenzie had a goal and an assist in the win.
One of ODU's premiere returning goal scorers put away what would turn into the game-winner in the 16th minute of play. Junior Shavon Knight slid the ball into the left pocket of the goal on an assist by McKenzie.
Just over seven minutes later, newcomer Ashley Kukura would rifle one home on a rebound of Janna Pearson's shot. Wesleyan's star keeper Lindsey Williams would make the save on Pearson's shot, but had it carem right to the foot of the Kukura for the goal.
With the clock reading 73:29, freshman Kelsey Williams found herself near the corner making a textbook cross over the middle of the field. McKenzie nailed the pass on the one-time header into the net for the Lady Monarchs third goal of the match.
Lauren Tupman and Colby Owen would combine for the shutout for Old Dominion, facing just one shot from the Marlins offense. The Lady Monarchs took 18 shots, putting ten on goal against Williams. Williams made seven saves as she was between the pipes for the whole 90 minutes.
The Lady Monarchs will start the 2007 regular season on Sunday, September 2 at home against Loyola College (Md.). Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
