HAMPTON, Va. - The ODU wrestling Monarchs were eliminated from the 2010 Virginia Duals by No. 18 Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Hampton Coliseum.

A pin by nationally-ranked Jesse Strawn at 197-pounds brought ODU to within striking distance going into the final bout, but UVA's Jack Danilkowicz won the heavyweight decision to give the Cavaliers a 21-15 victory.

Old Dominion, which falls to 4-3 in dual meets this season, got wins from No. 3 James Nicholson, freshman Justin LaValle, No. 13 Chris Brown and No. 10 Strawn.

The Monarchs, ranked No. 25 in the latest NWCA/USA Today Poll, raced out to an early 6-0 lead as James Nicholson won a 5-3 decison over UVA's Matt Snyder and LaValle won his second straight match, besting Matt Cubillos 5-0.

Virginia would claim the next three matchups though, including a 16-1 technical fall victory from No. 18 Danny Gonsor at 157-pounds.

With UVA leading 11-6, Brown would take to the mat for ODU at 165-pounds. His 6-1 decision over Michael Chaires brought the Monarchs to within two points in the team scoring (11-9). Brown was a perfect 3-0 at the Virginia Duals.

Virginia would get some breathing room in the next two matches as they sent a pair of nationally-ranked wrestlers to the mat at 174 and 184 pounds.

No. 4 Chris Henrich got a major decision over ODU's Eric Decker and No. 19 Mike Salopek picked up a 7-3 decision over sophomore Joe Budi.

With ODU trailing 18-9 and two matches remaining, the Monarchs were in desperate need of a pin and Strawn came through with precisely that. Strawns pin over No. 16 Brent Jones at the 4:17 mark cut Virginia's lead to 18-15.

ODU's comeback hopes were dashed though as Virginia's Jack Danilkowicz topped freshman Grant Chapman, 9-3.

The Monarchs will now head to Fairfax to compete in the CAA Duals on January 16.
