Monarchs Advance At Southern Intercollegiate Championships

ATHENS, Ga. -- Two of the three Monarch singles entries advanced in the first day of action of the Southern Intercollegiate Men's Tennis Championships held on the campus of the University of Georgia on Friday. Sophomores Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel), ranked 18th in the ITA Preseason Poll released Friday, and Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) each picked up Round of 64 victories to advance.
Srugo, the Divison I singles bracket's fourth seed, defeated the Citadel's Danny Dossetor in the Round of 64 in three sets. After falling behind 1-6 after the first set, Srugo rallied to win the next two sets, 6-1, 6-3. He moves on to the Round of 32 where he will face #116 Davey Sandgren of Tennessee.
Senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) was the other Monarch featured in the Division I singles backet. As of press time, his Round of 64 result against Georgia State's Martin Stiegwardt was not available.
In the Division II singles bracket, Seleznev defeated Pjotrs Necajevs of Mississippi State in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. His Round of 32 opponent will be Georgia Tech's Luke Rassow-Kantor.
Srugo and Cancado will also take part in doubles action tomorrow. The Monarch duo, ranked 52nd in the Preseason ITA Poll released on Friday are seeded eighth in the bracket and await the winner of Roy Sichel/Dorian Host of UNC-Charlotte and Daniel Isaza/Travis Sandlant of East Tennessee State for their Round of 32 match-up.
