NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion women's rowing team has released its 2012-13 schedule. In light of the recent decision to join Conference USA this spring, Dan Garbutt is excited to face new competition and to compete in their first ever San Diego Crew Classic.
The schedule kicks off on Oct. 27, in Philadelphia, PA., where they will compete in the Head of the Schuylkill. Last year, in spite of tough weather conditions, the team managed to do well with the Open Four placing third and in the Women's Frosh/Novice Eight taking fourth.
On Nov. 3-4, the Lady Monarchs will travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., where they will be competing in the Head of the Hooch. It was an impressive showing for the Lady Monarchs last year, capturing first place in the Lightweight 4+ place and earning second place in the Women's Open 8+. Closing out the fall schedule, the Lady Monarchs will head to Charlottesville, VA., where they will compete in the Rivanna Ramp on Nov. 11. They will be competing against competitors from the ACC conference such as Virginia, last year's National Champions.
Heading into to their spring portion of the schedule, ODU will train in Austin, Texas from March 9 -14 and wrap up their training facing the University of Texas on March 15. On March 23, the Lady Monarchs will host North Carolina on the Lafayette River. Last year, the Lady Monarchs' Varsity 8 dominated the Tar Heels by four seconds. In the Varsity 4, the Lady Monarchs continued their strong performance with a dominating win.
ODU will go to San Diego, Calif., for their first ever San Diego Crew Classic. This will be a two- day event, and is the largest regatta for eight-oared rowing shells.
Fans should mark their calendars for April 13-14 for the Knecht Cup, which will be held in Cherry Hill, NJ. ODU was successful in the Varsity Eight Petite Final, earning first place and fourth place in the Frosh/Novice. In the Second Varsity Eight third final ODU placed second and in the Varsity Four Grand Final, the Lady Monarchs placed sixth.
Traveling to the Miami, Fl., the team will face off with the Miami Hurricanes in their second meeting in the last four years.
The schedule wraps up with the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 10. After transitioning from the CAA to Conference USA, the Lady Monarchs are looking forward to the new competition at the C-USA championship being held May 18, in Oakridge, Tenn.
