NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 11) The defending national champion Old Dominion field hockey team lost its first game of the season, a 5-1 decision against #6 Penn State Saturday afternoon at Foreman Field. The #2 Lady Monarchs drop to 4-1 overall (2-0 CAA) while the Lady Lions improve to 3-0 overall (0-0 Big Ten).

Sophomore Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, Pa.) scored Old Dominion's loan goal with just over five minutes to play in the first half. The goal tied the game at one apiece, but the Lady Monarchs could not hold on as Penn State netted four goals on four shots in the second half.

Old Dominion pulled goalkeeper Mary Beth Freeman (Holland, Pa.) with 12:47 left to play for the player advantage on offense. The strategy did not work, however, as Penn State's Maegan Galie (Collegeville, Pa.) led the way with two goals and three assists on the afternoon.

The #2 Lady Monarchs will travel south this weekend for two games in North Carolina. Old Dominion will take on North Carolina Saturday and Duke Sunday.
