The Old Dominion wrestling team will officially begin the 2002-03 season on Saturday when they host the annual ODU Invitational. The Monarchs welcome five different teams to town for the all day tournament which begins at 10 a.m.

Davidson, Delaware State, Anderson, South Carolina, and the Newport News Apprentice School will be competing this year in the ODU Field House. All 10 weight classes will be represented with the schools fielding full teams. Davidson and Delaware State were participants last season as Davidson's Jeff Bender won the 157 pound weight class.

John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA), Casey Todd (Monroe, NY), Ben Summerlin (Lynchburg, VA), and Greg Gill (Chesapeake, VA) will look to lead their young team to another successful year of ODU wrestling.

Also, Starkes and Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) are ranked second in the CAA in their respective weight classes with Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) getting a third place ranking.

The projected starting lineup for the Monarchs during the season includes: Redshirt freshman Chris Buckner at 125, freshman Jon Stovich at 133, freshman Chad Sichak at 141, sophomore Casey Todd at 149, junior Dennis Whitby at 157, senior Dave Kaplan at 165, senior Ben Summerlin or sophomore John Adams at 174, freshman Adam Wright at 184, junior Greg Gill at 197, and junior Derrell Lorthridge in the heavyweight class.
