Women's Tennis Defeats CAA Newcomer Georgia State, 5-2

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team picked up another Colonial Athletic Association victory as the Lady Monarchs defeated CAA newcomer Georgia State, 5-2, on the courts at Huntington Park in Newport News on Saturday.

The win upped the Lady Monarchs overall record to 7-3 and 2-1 in the CAA. Old Dominion has won three of its last four matches.

In singles, the Lady Monarchs picked up wins from No. 2 through No. 5. Newcomer Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa), junior Fernanda Luiz (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), and junior Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) all registered their victories in straight sets. Haarhoff earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles over Martina Nitkova. Luiz defeated Rachel Malina at No. 4 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-3. Santos downed Keira Strickland at the No. 5 position by a score of 6-1, 7-5.

Old Dominion garnered its fourth victory by sophomore Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil), as she defeated Mateja Podgorsek at No. 3 singles with a tie-break, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0.

Although the Lady Monarchs dropped a match at No. 1 doubles, Old Dominion rebounded with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions to take the doubles point. It was Charleen Haarhoff and Fernanda Luiz teaming for an 8-6 victory over the Lady Panthers' Rachel Malina and Mateja Podforsek at No. 2 doubles, while junior Barbara Kerner (Landaulpf, Germany) and Barbara Costa joined for an 8-2 No. 3 doubles win over Britney Smith and Keira Strickland.

The Lady Monarchs return to action on March 7th when they travel to Florida to take on #47 South Florida. South Florida will represent the fourth ITA ranked opponent for the Lady Monarchs this season as they have already taken on Virginia, Virginia Commonwealth, and the University of Maryland.
