Lady Monarchs Drop First CAA Game of Season to George Mason, 17-7

FAIRFAX, Va. - The ODU women's lacrosse team played their second game of the week against a team ranked in the top ten nationally as they faced #9 George Mason (8-1) in their first game of the CAA regular season. The Patriots dropped Old Dominion (4-2) by a final count of 17-7, despite a late push by the Lady Monarchs scoring five of the last seven goals in the game. Sophomores Katie Bruno and Ashley Kellogg scored two unassisted goals in the game for ODU. Old Dominion will host #19 James Madison on Sunday, April 6 at 1:00 p.m.
George Mason, ranked a historically best for the program ninth in the nation, jumped to an 8-0 lead in the first half as Megan Bartlett and Alana Chan scored two apiece in the first half. ODU would play the #9 team in the nation even the rest of the way as Mason edged the Lady Monarchs 9-7 after the opening run.
Headed into the half the Patriots had an 11-1 lead as Jessica Noone had the lone Lady Monarch score. However, ODU had 10 shots in the frame with nine coming on-goal.
In the second half, ODU matched the Patriots in scoring, 6-6, including five of the last seven goals in the game. Old Dominion scored on six of their eight shots in the second half as all seven of the teams scores came unassisted. Ashley Kellogg scored on a free-position shot with 14:37 left to start the 5-2 run for ODU to end the game
Mason has won seven straight to start the year 8-1 while outscoring opponents 118-80. ODU dropped to 4-2 on the season with the loss, but put 17 of their 18 shots on goal. In the two losses, 29 of their last 31 shots have been on-net.
The Lady Monarchs face their third nationally ranked opponent this week on Sunday as they host #19 James Madison at 1:00 p.m. at Foreman Field.
