Monarch Jesse Pearce Runner-Up in 157 Class at Carolina Open

CHAPEL HILL, NC -The Old Dominion wrestling team competed in the Rubbermaid Open, hosted by the University of North Carolina, Saturday, with Jesse Pearce (Norfolk, VA) posting a runner-up finish for the Monarchs in the 157 class. The Tar Heels hosted 20 teams and roughly 300 wrestlers for the event. There were no team scores for the tournament.

Pearce was defeated by Ohio University's Jake Percival, who is ranked #3 by InterMat Wrestling, by a 5-0 decision. Pearce defeated Cumberland College's Trevor Fair (M. Dec. 12-4), UNC-Greensboro's Phil Bliss (T.Fall 16-0), Cumberland College's Matt Milton (Fall 3:38) and Michigan State's Matt McCarthy (Dec. 3-1) to reach the finals.

Also placing were Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE), Adam Wright (Dayton, VA) and John Adams (Chesapeake, VA). Lorthridge placed 6th in the 285 class, dropping his first match to UNC's Ryan Adams (Dec. 5-3) before defeating UNC's Neil Ridge (Dec. 8-3), Appalachian State's David Hazell (Dec. 6-1), VMI's Scott Buhman (Dec. 3-1) and Citadel's Jordan Everett (Dec. 4-3) before dropping another match to UNC's Ryan Adams (Dec. 3-2).

Wright placed 3rd in the 184 class, defeating Duke's Frank Cornely (Fall 5:35) and Ohio's Ryan Knapp (Fall 3:05), before dropping to UNC's Mark Canty (Dec. 3-1). Wright defeated Appalachian State's Aaron Barnette (Dec. 7-2) to take third place.

Adams placed 6th in the 165 class, defeating Davidson College's Patrick Scandling (M. Dec. 14-3) before dropping a match to Duke's Michael Mitchell (Dec. 6-2). Adams then won matches against Gardner-Webb's Brendan Couture (M.Dec. 13-1), UNC's Jared Hogan (Fall 2:59), Appalachian State's Ajay Foreman (Dec. 8-4) and UNC-Greensboro's Scott Fisher (Dec. 8-2) before dropping his final match to UNC-Greensboro's Keith Ritter (M. Dec. 12-1) to take home 6th.

Following an exam break, the Monarchs are back in action Friday, December 19, taking part in the Beast of the East in Newark, NJ.
