BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The No. 23 Old Dominion University Wrestling team fell to conference rival No. 19 Binghamton on Friday evening at West Gym, 29-9.

A short-handed Monarch squad that was without two of their ranked starters saw ODU take a lead early, winning two of the first three matches and narrowly falling in the other. Binghamton (15-4, 6-0) would turn the table however beginning at 149 pounds where they reeled off five consecutive wins to seal the match.

In a hard fought contest at 125 pounds, the Bearcats’ Derek Steeley was able to slip past redshirt freshman #29 Jerome Robinson for a 7-5 win. Sophomore Scott Festejo would then tie the dual up after a 9-4 win at 133 pounds over BU’s Patrick Hunter.

After being sidelined for several weeks, sophomore No. 26 Justin LaValle returned for ODU and came out victorious at 141 pounds in an 11-4 decision over Joe Bonaldi to give the Monarchs the lead. BU would then begin their charge at 149 pounds as No. 4 Donnie Vinson powered past redshirt junior Brennan Brumley with a 15-5 major decision.

Filling in for No. 23 John Nicholson, freshman Jacob Kingett was no match for No. 9 Justin Lister at 157 pounds as he was pinned at the 1:07 mark. In a battle of ranked foes at 165, Binghamton’s No. 25 Matt Kaylor got the better of sophomore No. 21 Tristan Warner in an 8-2 outcome.

Redshirt junior Brett Miller, in for No. 13 Te Edwards at 174 pounds, fought hard but was doubled up in a 6-3 decision. At 184 pounds, No. 20 Nate Schiedel pinned redshirt sophomore Billy Curling at the 1:28 mark to seal the Bearcat win.

Senior Joe Budi was able to pull an upset at 197 pounds in the closest contest of the evening as he defeated No. 31 Cody Reed, 3-2. No. 18 Nick Gwiazdowski proved to be too much for redshirt junior Grant Chapman at heavyweight in a 19-6 major decision to conclude the dual.

Old Dominion (13-9, 3-3) returns to action on Sunday for their regular season finale as they travel to No. 21 Virginia. The dual is set for 2 p.m. in Charlottesville, Va.
