Feb. 7, 2002
Harrisonburg, VA-James Madison junior Mark Minuto scored a major decision in the final bout of the evening to give the Dukes a 23-18 victory against CAA foe Old Dominion this evening.
The Dukes were given an early 12-0 lead when ODU forfeited the 141 and 149 bouts but were forced to hang on as the Monarchs rolled to victories in five of the next eight weight classes.
Senior Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) ignited the comeback with a pin at 174, handling JMU's Steve Broglie in just 2:52. Monarch freshman John Adams (Chesapeake, VA) then scored a 7-4 upset over defending CAA champ Dave Colabella at 184.
After the Dukes picked up a major decision at 197, Monarch grapplers Derrell Lorthridge (Wilmington, DE) and John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) posted victories to cut the JMU lead to 19-18, but the 133 lb. bout went in favor of Madison, sending ODU to their eighth straight loss.
The injury-riddled Monarchs are now 0-8, 0-3 CAA. The Dukes improve to 6-7, 2-2 CAA.
Senior Jeff Rusak, ranked fourth nationally, improved to 23-0 on the season and 8-0 in dual meets. He leads the team with 12 pins.
