Men's Tennis Spilts Matches From Weekend

NORFOLK, Va. -- The #75 Old Dominion men's team spilt their matches this weekend to move to 6-10 on the year with a 6-1 win over American on Saturday and a close 4-3 loss to Winthrop on Sunday afternoon.
The Monarchs rolled through the doubles competition and picked up five of the six singles matches in Saturday's victory over the Eagles.
Senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) and freshman Rodrigo Souza (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) teamed up for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles over Juancarlo Vazquez and Mark Doumba, while the freshman team of Eidy Igarashi (São José do Rio Preto, Brazil) and Juliano Cirimbelli (Balneário Camboriú, Brazil) played to an 8-5 win over Jason Harris and Sebastein Proisy against at No. 2 doubles. The Monarchs completed the sweep when sophomore Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) downed American No. 3 doubles team of Jeffery Schnell and Juan Jaysingh.
American's lone point came at No. four singles as Jeffrey Schnell defeated ODU's Adriano Mello (Londrina, Brazil), 6-0, 6-3.
All five of the Monarch singles victories against American came in straight sets. Old Dominion's top singles player Izak van der Merwe defeated Juancarlo Vazques, 6-2, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot, while Henrique Cancado edged out Juan Jaysingh at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-4. Other Monarchs picking up wins was Eidy Igrashi at No. 3 singles with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Sebastein Priosy, Rodrigo Souza with a No. 5 singles win over Mark Doumba, 6-1, 6-0, and Juliano Cirimbelli with a 6-2, 6-0, win over Jason Harris.
On Sunday, the Winthrop Eagles took the doubles point and managed to spilt the singles matches to edge out the Monarchs by one point, 4-3.
The Monarchs took the top three singles matches which included #25 Izak van der Merwe's straight set No. 1 singles victory over Winthrop's #82 Clayton Almeida, 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Henrique Cancado used three sets to top Vinicius Bortolatto, 2-6, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, while Eidy Igarashi rounded out the ODU wins with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Jorge Padilla at No. 3 singles.
Although the Eagles took the doubles point, the Monarchs No. 3 doubles team of Nate Grover and Henrique Cancado picked up an 8-5 decision over Vinicius Bortolatto and Thiago Barbosa.
Both the Old Dominion men's and women's team will next play in the Hampton Roads College Tennis Elite 8 team tournament held at Owl Creek Tennis Center March 24-26. The draw can be found on the right side of the page at www.hamptonroadstennis.com .
