Purnell's Flyers Escape With 71-67 Win
Dec. 20, 2002
NORFOLK, VA - Old Dominion Hall of Famer Oliver Purnell and his Dayton Flyers escaped the Ted Constant Convocation Center with a hard fought 71-67 victory over the Old Dominion men's basketball team in non-conference action Friday night.
Brooks Hall had a team-high 20 points, including three key three-pointers down the stretch for the Flyers as Dayton fought back from a seven point deficit to improve their record to 6-2. Senior forward Ricardo Marsh (Mebane, NC) had a game-high 24 points as he went over the 1,000 point mark for his career with 1,005 total points and tie for 36th on the all-time ODU points leaders list. The Monarchs fell to 2-5 on the season with the loss.
Old Dominion would hold onto a small lead throughout most of the first 15 minutes. Rasheed Wright (Greensboro, NC) had 14 first half points as ODU was up by as many as four before the Flyers built their own five-point lead after two back-to-back lay-ups by Ramod Marshall. Marsh was successful on two free throws to pull the Monarchs within one with one minute remaining in the half, but Marshall hit another one for Dayton to put them up 35-31 at intermission.
Hall hit the first of his five second half three pointers to open the period and give the Flyers a seven point lead, 38-31. He was 6-12 from beyond the arc for the game and added seven boards. The Monarchs rebounded from the deficit and went on a 9-2 run to tie the game at 40 with just over 16 minutes left in the game.
ODU would then go on a 19-12 run and build their largest lead, 59-52, after a three point basket by John Waller (Richmond, VA) at the 7:20 mark. The Monarchs were holding on to a four-point 63-59 lead with 4:21 remaining, but Hall's shot from downtown and Marshall's lay-up returned the lead back to the Flyers with less than three minutes to go, 64-63. Old Dominion had a chance to regain the lead, but committed a crucial turnover following a 30-second time-out. Marshall missed the front end of a one and one, but the Flyers would control the board, forcing ODU to foul once more. Keith Waleskowski would hit both of his chances to seal the victory
Wright added 21 points for ODU while Troy Nance (Va. Beach, VA) had nine assists and committed no turnovers off the bench. ODU and Dayton each shot 44 percent from the field while the Flyers were 7-19 (37%) from three-point range and 16-20 (80%) from the charity stripe. The Monarchs were 5-18 (28%) from behind the arc and 10-14 (71%) from the line.
ODU will travel to George Washington after the holiday break to take on the Colonials at Saturday, December 28th, at 2:00 p.m.
