Monarch Wrestlers Defeat Delaware State, 43-3

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion wrestling team, currently 7-6 on the year, defeated Delaware State this afternoon, 43-3. Today marks the second time Old Dominion has defeated the Hornets this year. The Monarchs also upended Delaware State on January 9 at the Duke Duals, by the score of 41-6.

Old Dominion was benefitted by three Hornet forfeits at 125, 141 and 165. Freshman Payton Lamb (Burke, VA) put the Monarchs ahead 9-0 with a decision at 133 following the initial Hornet forfeit, and Dennis Whitby (Lanoke Harbor, NJ) followed that up with a 4-3 decision over DSU's John Smith at 149. Sophomore Jesse Pearce (Norfolk, VA) tacked on a major decision at 157 to put the Monarchs ahead 22-0, effectively sealing the match for the Monarchs.

DSU's lone win on the evening came courtesy of Leonard Bridgeforth, who recorded an overtime win at 197 to prevent the shutout.

Monarch grappler Jeff Rusak (Reading, PA) moved to 29-3 on the season with a victory this afternoon, and can complete his third season of at least 30+ wins with a victory next Thursday against George Mason. The junior is also currently 35-0 in three years of dual meet competition.

Old Dominion will conclude the regular season at home next week, when they host CAA powerhouse George Mason on Thursday, February 22.
