NORFOLK, Va. -- The ODU women's soccer team (5-5-1, 1-1-0) lost its first game at home since the 2007 season with a 3-1 setback to the UNC Wilmington Seahawks (5-5-0, 1-1-0). The Lady Monarchs got a goal from rookie Ashlee Coutu (Lebanon, Conn.) and outshot the Seahawks 18-7, but fell to 1-1 in league play with the loss.

Wilmington jumped to a quick lead in the 6th minute of play on an unusual score from senior Ashley Myers. She received a pass from sophomore midfielder Erin Pardini ahead of the ODU defense and had open space between her and the keeper. With her first touch, she lofted a high bouncing ball toward the frame that found it's way into the net for the go-ahead goal.

The Lady Monarchs would answer in the 21st minute, tying the game at 1-1. Senior midfielder Kirstin Walker crossed the ball from the right side to the back post, where senior Jodi Knorowski played a nifty back heel to Coutu in the middle of the box. The rookie forward laced a shot from about 8 yards out that tied the game for Old Dominion.

UNC Wilmington would go ahead for good, though, just eight minutes later. In the 29th minute, the Seahawks' Brittany Croce sent a ball from the right corner across the goal mouth where ODU's sophomore defender Rachael Carroll looked to clear, but it glanced off her foot into the goal instead. The own goal would prove the eventual gamewinner as UNCW added an insurance tally in the 84th minute off the foot of leading goal scorer Stephanie Rose.

ODU outshot the Seahawks, 18-7, including eight shots on goal to UNCW's four. Reserve goalkeeper for UNCW, Caitlin Hunter, stepped in to make six saves in just over one half's worth of work after starting GK Chandler Follett had to leave due to injury.

The three goals allowed at home was the most since the regular season finale in 2007. It was also the first loss since that game, when William & Mary won a 4-1 decision against the Lady Monarchs.

ODU continues CAA action next weekend, as they play host to Drexel University and the University of Delaware on Friday and Sunday respectively. Kick against Drexel will be at 7:00 pm on Friday night while ODU will host Delaware at 1:00 pm on Sunday.

Starting with the game against Drexel, the Lady Monarchs will be making and selling pink tye-dye shirts to raise money for the Kicks Against Breast Cancer charity, in support of the Claudia Mayer Research Center. Shirts will be $15 and will be sold at all home games throughout October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
