No. 56 Men's Tennis Keeps Rolling With Wins Over James Madison and Richmond

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The No. 56 Old Dominion men's tennis team keeps rolling as they picked up a 7-0 win over Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival James Madison and a 4-0 win over Richmond over the weekend. The Monarchs have now won four straight and improve to 5-2 overall heading into Wednesday's match-up with third-ranked Virginia.

The Monarchs kicked things off with its 7-0 blanking of the Dukes of James Madison.

In doubles action, the teams of Alex Selznev and Eidy Igarashi at No. 1 doubles and Rodrigo Souza and Yakov Diskin (Yorktown, Va.) at No. 2 doubles, each won their matches by a score of 8-2. At No. 3 singles Henrique Cancado teamed with Dominic Manilla for an 8-1 win over Brian Clay and Brian Rubenstein.

Singles saw all six Monarchs register wins in straight sets. Among the highlights were No. 33 Herique Cancado at No. 2 singles and Rodrigo Souza at No. 5 singles defeating their opponents by 6-1, 6-1 scores.

Other winners included eighth-ranked Harel Srugo at No. 1 singles with a 6-3, 6-1 win over the Dukes' Jesse Tar. Alex Seleznev took a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mike Smith at the No. 3 position. Eidy Igarashi took to the court at No. 4 singles picked up a 6-2, 6-2 decision over James Madison's Brian Clay. Rookie Yakov Diskin edged out Brian Rubenstein, 7-6, 6-3 in his No. 6 singles appearance.

Against Richmond, Old Dominion swept through the doubles point and took three singles matches. Match play was suspended once the Monarchs victory was certain.

In doubles, Alex Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi teamed for an 8-3 No. 1 doubles win over Bobby McNally and Matt Stillwagon. Rodrigo Souza and Yakov Diskin posted an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles against the Spiders' Chris Lovis and Doug Banker. No. 3 doubles saw Henrique Cancado and Dominic Manilla defeated Sami Belakhlef and Matt Fasina, 8-3.

Souza picked up another win and allowed just one game in his No. 5 singles match with the Spiders' Sami Belakhlef in a 6-1, 6-0 win.

Other singles winners against Richmond included Alex Seleznev at No. 2 singles and Eidy Igarashi at No. 3 singles. Seleznev downed Doug Banker, 6-2, 6-3, while Igarashi took home a 6-3, 6-2 win over Bobby McNally.

Old Dominion returns to action on Wednesday in Charlottesville against the third ranked Cavaliers.
