Monarchs to Play at Idaho, Host Rhode Island in 2013
Oct. 22, 2012
NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion football program has announced two additional games for the 2013 schedule. The Monarchs will host Rhode Island on Nov. 2 and play at Idaho on Nov. 9.
"Rhode Island gives us a quality home game with a former Colonial Athletic Association rival," ODU Athletic Director Dr. Wood Selig said. "Idaho is the first series with an FBS opponent and look forward to competing against them in the future."
Idaho will be making a return trip to Norfolk to play the Monarchs in 2019. As the Monarchs begin their transition to the Football Bowl Subdivision of NCAA football and as a Conference USA member, the program must play a mixed schedule of FBS and FCS opponents in 2013.
ODU will be ineligible for conference and NCAA post-season play next season, however will add eight Conference USA opponents to the 2014 schedule, before joining the C-USA as a full member in 2015.
The Idaho contest is the third FBS opponent scheduled for the 2013 season, as ODU will play at the University of Maryland on Sept. 7 and at the University of North Carolina on Oct. 12.
The Monarchs will also play a two-year series with Norfolk State, travelling to the Spartans stadium on Oct. 26, 2013 and hosting NSU in 2015. Future C-USA member UNC Charlotte will visit Foreman Field at SB Ballard Stadium next season on Nov. 16. Idaho will be an FBS independent in 2013 and has appeared in two bowl games as a program, playing and winning the Humanitarian Bowl twice.
ODU has played Rhode Island once, defeating the Rams in Kingston, 31-23 in 2011.
