Women's Tennis Knocks Off No. 72 Richmond To Improve To 6-0 On The Season

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The Old Dominion women's tennis team upped its overall mark to 6-0 on the season as they defeated No. 72 University of Richmond, 5-2, Friday afternoon at Center Court Racket Club.
The win marked the Lady Monarchs first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 44 North Carolina State back on February 27, 2004. The ODU women's tennis team is off to its best start since the 2000-01 season when the Lady Monarchs went 21-2 and captured the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) title.
Old Dominion captured two of the three doubles matches for first point of the afternoon. Charleen Haarhoff (Durban, South Africa) and Fernanda Luiz (Nova Lima, Brazil) edged out Bea Grasu and Robin Carter at No. 1 doubles with an 8-5 win, while the No. 3 doubles team of Barbara Costa (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Daniela Cohen captured an 8-3 win over Xenia Schneider and Jelena Zivanovic.
Singles action saw the Lady Monarchs win four of six matches. No. 93 Charleen Haarhoff prevailed over Pamela Duran at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 7-5. Larissa Santos (Florianopolis, Brazil) downed Bea Grasu, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. No. 5 singles had Barbara Costa take the first and third games from Xenia Schneider for the win. Costa won, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3. Daniela Cohen, at No. 6 singles, provided the Lady Monarchs with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Jelena Zivanovic.
The Lady Monarch women's tennis team puts its undefeated streak on the line when they take on No. 33 Maryland on Saturday, February 10th in College Park.
