Swimming And Diving Concludes Regular Season Splitting Meet With Towson

NORFOLK, Va. -- The Old Dominion men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the regular season Saturday splitting its meet with Towson. The Monarchs improved to 10-1 overall with a 222-77 win over the Tigers, capturing victories in all but one event on the afternoon. The women's squad fell 90.5-209.5 to the Tigers, dropping to 9-7 overall. The Lady Monarchs won four events in the loss.
Both relay teams were victorious for the Monarchs. The 200 medley relay team of Mikael Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), Kristian Ramkvist (Bjarred, Sweden), Johan Lundberg (Fjaras, Sweden), and Tim Daniels (Oakton, Va.) placed first with a time of 1:36.85. The 400 free team of Steven Loccisano (Fredericksburg, Va.), Arni Arnason (Msfellsbaer, Iceland), Lundberg, and Chad Gangwer (Va. Beach, Va.) captured a time of 3:09.47 to win the event.
Four-time CAA Swimmer of the Week posted an additional three wins on the day. The Icelandic Olympian won both the 50 free (21.23) and the 100 free (47.00), as well as the 200 breast (2:09.02).
Greg Bird (Northamptonshire, England), Mikael Ramkvist, and Josh Kinas (Reston, Va.) also earned a pair of individual wins. In addition to first place finish with the 200 medley squad, Ramkvist swam his way to top times in both the 100 back (51.87), his fastest finish of the season, and the 200 back (1:52.96). Bird won both the 1000 free (9:52.76) as well as the 500 free (4:45.86). Kinas meanwhile registered first place times in both the 100 breast (59.31) as well as the 200 IM (1:57.75).
Loccisano, who early swam a leg with the winning 400 free relay squad, also picked up a win in the 200 free (1:46.07).
Rounding out the individual event victories for the Monarchs was Kevin Latimer (Newport News, Va.), who hit the wall first in the 200 fly (1:55.53).
Diving saw Old Dominion take both the 1 meter requireds and the 1 meter optionals. Peter Stickl (Falls Church, Va.) won the requireds with a score of 157.35. Teammate David Skorupa (Richmond, Va.) scored a 268.13 to take the optionals.
On the women's side, the 200 medley relay squad picked up its top time of the 2008-09 season. The squad of April Barrientos (Va. Beach, Va.), Erla Haraldsdottir (Njardvik, Iceland), Agata Nowak (Gorzow, Poland), and Emma Forbes (Peekskill, N.Y.) captured a finish of 1:46.48 to win the event.
Barrientos also recorded another top time with her performance in the 100 back. She won the event clocking in at 57.12, her fastest time of the year.
Also picking up wins were Haraldsdottir in the 200 breast (2:20.36) and Nowak in 100 fly (57.03).
The Monarchs and Lady Monarchs return to the pool at the end of February at the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Championships. The championships will take place February 25-28 on the campus of George Mason.
