Lady Monarchs Defeat East Carolina, 74-58

    NORFOLK, Va. (AP) - (Feb. 20) Sharon Francis scored 17 points Sunday as Old Dominion coach Wendy Larry got her 300th win with the Monarchs, 74-58 over East Carolina in the Colonial Athletic Conference.

    The Monarchs (20-4, 13-0) led by just 52-47 with 8:55 remaining, but went on a 16-2 run behind six points each from Francis and Natalie Diaz.

    East Carolina (12-12, 7-6) kept it close early, pulling to 34-31 on a jumper by Waynetta Veney as time expired in the first half. In the second half, they trailed 36-34 after Tamilla Murray's three-point play with 18:07 remaining.

    The Monarchs pulled away in the second half on 57 percent shooting, making 16 of 28 shots.

    Diaz finished with 15 points for Old Dominion. Hamchetou Maiga added 12 and Okeisha Howard 11. Guard Alli Spence contributed eight assists and five steals.

    The Pirates were led by Veney's 14 points. Murray added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

    The win gave Larry a 300-99 record at Old Dominion in her 13th season. She has a 349-130 overall, including stints at Virginia Wesleyan (1978-79) and Arizona (1985-87).

    She has been selected coach of the year five times in the Colonial Athletic Association, including last season. The Monarchs have won eight straight CAA titles.
