Lady Monarchs Cruise Past Highlanders In Home Opener, 5-1
By ODU Athletics
NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 5 Old Dominion University field hockey team coasted to a 5-1 victory on Sunday afternoon in their home opener as five different players scored a goal in the win over Radford at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
Old Dominion (3-2) moves to 21-0 all-time against Radford (0-5) as the Lady Monarch dominated the game statistically, outshooting the Highlanders, 38-4. Radford did not have a shot in the second half and managed just one penalty corner in the game while ODU tallied 16.
The Lady Monarchs got off to a quick start as senior Maartje van Rijswijk scored her first goal of the season less than five minutes into the contest on a stellar cross from junior co-captain Kati Nearhouse. Radford would then respond with just their second goal of the season three minutes later off their lone penalty corner. After redshirt senior goalkeeper Marla Petriello saved the initial shot, Paige Doughty was able to corral the rebound and launch it in to tie the game.
ODU would go right back to work in transition as Nearhouse picked up her second goal of the season on a cross from freshman Sarah Breen. Midway through the first period, redshirt sophomore Nicole Goff scored her first career goal of a Radford deflection on a feed from van Rijswijk to make it 3-1.
Five minutes before halftime, sophomore Lydia Velzian scored off a penalty corner set. After the initial shot was saved by Highlander goalie Sidney Encarnacion, Velzian collected the deflection and scored ODU's fourth goal of the afternoon.
Instituting a new defense in the second half, Radford frustrated the Lady Monarchs for much of the second period. Breen was able to penetrate the defense midway through the second half and launch a shot just inside the circle for the final goal of the contest.
Encarnacion tallied 17 saves for the Highlanders in goal while Petriello had three saves for the Lady Monarchs in her first start of the season.
Old Dominion returns to action on Friday when they travel to Chapel Hill, N.C. to face No. 1 North Carolina at 6 p.m.
