All Three Monarch Singles Entries Advance To The Round Of 16

ATHENS, Ga. -- All three Monarch singles entries advanced on day two of the 2006 Southern Intercollegiate Men's Tennis Championships being held on the campus of the University of Georgia. Senior Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and sophomores Harel Srugo (Kibutz Gazit, Israel) and Alex Seleznev (Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic) will each play on Sunday in the Round of 16.
In the Division I singles bracket, Srugo, the tournament's fourth seed and ranked 18th nationally in the Preseason ITA Poll, advanced with a win over #116 Davey Sandgren in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Srugo will take on #120 Jean Yves Aubone of Florida State in the Round of 16.
Cancado, whose Round of 64 results was unavailable yesterday, reached the Round of 32 with a victory over fellow CAA member Martin Stiegwardt of Georgia State, 7-6(3), 6-2 . Today he advanced after Yale's Brandon Wai withdrew from competition. Awaiting Cancado in the Round of 16 is the tournament's eighth seed, #32 Arvid Puramen of Virginia Tech.
In the Division II bracket, Seleznev advanced in a three set victory over Georgia Tech's Luke Rassow-Kantor. After Seleznev won the first set, 6-1, Rassow-Kantor came back to win the second set, 6-3. However, Seleznev came back to win the third set, 6-2, and advance to the Round of 16. His opponent will be David Goulet of Duke.
Srugo and Cancado were also in action on Saturday in doubles action. They received a Round of 64 bye and at press time their Round of 32 result against Daniel Isaza/Travis Sandlant of East Tennessee State was not available.
