Monarch Wrestling Begins 2009-10 Season With Blue-Silver Intersquad Sunday

NORFOLK, Va. - The Old Dominion University wrestling team will kick off the 2009-10 season Sunday, Nov. 1 with its annual Blue-Silver Intersquad wrestle-off.

The full day of grappling events will begin at 3 p.m. with the Sixth Annual Fall Wrestling Clinic, featuring new Monarch assistant coach and Junior World Team member Luke Smith. At 5 p.m., the Monarchs will take the mats for the Blue-Silver Intersquad in an exhibition match.

Old Dominion is ranked No. 19 in the nation according to Additionally, five ODU wrestlers are listed in the individual rankings, highlighted by James Nicholson, who is ranked No. 7 in the 125-pound weight class. Nicholson went a remarkable 36-4 last season and captured the CAA Tournament title in his class.

Jesse Strawn and Chris Brown were both ranked in the Top 15. Strawn is 11th in the 197-pound weight class after going 36-13 last season and Brown placed 12th after winning the CAA Tournament at 165-pounds in 2009.

Other Monarchs nationally ranked include Eric Decker and Joe Budi.Decker is 21st at 174 and Budi is 25th at 184.

Sunday's events will be held in the Athletic Administration Building gymnasium on the campus of ODU. The clinic will be held in the wrestling center, while the match is in the Athletic Admin. Practice Gym. Parking will be available in the front and rear of the building, as well as in the Elkhorn Parking Garage on campus.

Registration forms for the clinic can be found on the wrestling page of Cost is $30 and athletes will receive instruction from the ODU coaching staff on a variety of wrestling techniques. There is no charge for the Blue-Silver Intersquad meet.
