NORFOLK, Va. - Old Dominion University women's basketball has announced the addition of 5-7 guard Stephanie Gardner. A transfer from nationally ranked Miami (Fla.), Gardner will be eligible in January of 2013. Gardner has started classes and can practice with the Lady Monarchs.

Gardner played the 2010-11 season as a freshman for the Hurricanes appearing in 25 games, playing 218 minutes. She helped Miami to its first ACC Regular Season Championship since joining the league in 2004.

A native of Glassboro, N.J., Gardner was a star player at Glassboro High School where she averaged 22.6 points per game her senior campaign. She was a two-time team captain and earned team MVP honors as a senior as well as having earned All Tri-County First Team honors.

"I'm excited to be at ODU and be a part of coach Barefoot's building process," Gardner said. "I want to help the team get back to its traditional winning ways. I think my leadership, work ethic and scoring ability will help the team on and off the court."

What they're saying about Stephanie Gardner

"She's a natural competitor who knows what it takes to win at this level. Her passion for the game is evident in the way she plays and how hard she works in practice, in the weight room and on her own. Having played a role in Miami's ACC regular season Championship last year, she brings championship experience and leadership that will immediately translate to our program's vision." - ODU Head Coach Karen Barefoot

"SG is a resilient athlete who has a rare passion and desire for the game, which makes it easy on any coach whom she encounters. ODU is a perfect fit for a player of her abilities. They have a great coaching staff and an atmosphere fit for greatness." - Personal Trainer Torrey Brooks (Brooks trains over 150 athletes, including college and NBA players)

"She is the hardest worker on the floor, diving for loose balls, taking a charge, doing whatever it takes for her team to win." - Glassboro High School Head Coach Rick Winsiewski
