Norfolk, VA (Nov. 17, 2000) -- The Old Dominion wrestling team will be hosting the annual Old Dominion Invitational on Sunday, November 19. Teams competing in the tournament include: Davidson, Delaware State, The Citadel, Howard, The Apprentice School, and Old Dominion. The action on the mat begins at 10 a.m., and admission is free to the public.

Last season the Monarchs did exceptionally well in the tournament, capturing first place at 125, 149, and 165. Old Dominion also finished with five wrestlers in the top three of their weight classes.

Leading the Monarchs this season will be NCAA qualifiers and CAA standouts Dennis Whitby (149), Paul Jimenez (125), and Jeff Rusak (174). Last season Whitby captured the CAA title at 149 and advanced to the NCAA Championships as a freshman, this season he figures to repeat that accomplishment. Rusak, a two-time CAA finalist at 157 and 165, will be looking to make his third consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships and capture his first conference crown in 2000-01.

He finished last season with a record of 33-6 and is currently ranked #14 in the country in his weight class by InterMat. Leading a corps of local wrestlers will be '99 CAA champ Paul Jimenez, from Lake Taylor HS. Jimenez, who redshirted last season, will be looking to regain his status as the premiere grappler in the conference at 125. Other local standouts include: heavyweight Leevi MacDonald (Va. Beach, VA), Greg Gill (184-Chesapeake, VA), Jim Howland (149-Va. Beach, VA), Louverture Jones (197-Yorktown), Dan Martin (165-Yorktown), and Joe Wright (165-Newport News, VA).
