WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Senior Jennifer Heister (Fayetteville, NY) recorded three goals and three assists for six points as No. 18 Old Dominion (1-0) defeated American (1-1), 13-4, on Saturday on a rainy Reeves Field in the Lady Monarchs' season opener. The game marked the first time the teams met in a non-conference meeting as American left the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) after last season for the Patriot League this year.
American opened the scoring just three minutes into the game with Courtney Bennett scoring on a free possession. The Eagles held the lead until the 20:27 mark when the Lady Monarchs went on a 4-1 tear before the break, getting two goals from last season's leading scorer Suzanne Woscyna (Phoenixville, PA) and one apiece from sophomores Molly Coane (Bay Shore, NY) and Janine Rodriguez (Davidsonville, MD).
Old Dominion got on the board first in the second half, scoring three times within a two-minute span to go up 7-1 with 26:00 remaining. American pulled to 7-2 just 40 seconds later on a goal by Nicole McCarthy , but the Lady Monarchs put the game away, scoring five more goals before the Eagles could find the back of the net again.
American goalkeeper Laura Randisi picked up 12 saves in the cage for the Eagles and backup goalie Nicci Homer picked up two in five minutes of action, but American was outshot by the Lady Monarchs, 30-16, and seemed to be on the defensive for much of the contest. Old Dominion netminder Beth O'Leary (Manilus, NY) stopped nine shots on net in her first collegiate start.
The Lady Monarchs return to action this week when they travel to Virginia on Wednesday, March 6th.
