Dan Rivera Named CAA Wrestling Rookie of the Week
Jan. 15, 2008
NORFOLK, Va. -- Dan Rivera (Winter Springs, Fla.) was named the CAA Rookie of the Week after a 5-1 last week with his only loss coming to the #1 wrestler in the nation. Rivera is the second Monarch to earn conference honors this season. Rivera helped the Monarchs place 3rd at the Virginia Duals, the highest the program ever placed since the Duals went to a 16-team format. The freshman will travel with the team to the CAA Duals this weekend in Fairfax, Va.
Rivera started the week with a 6-2 win over Kyle Robinson of Delaware State in home dual action. The win propelled ODU to its sixth straight home win dating back to the 2005-06 season.
At the Virginia Duals, Rivera went 4-1 to boost his season and career record to 9-15. He defeated Lock Haven's John Mangini, 3-2, and Virginia Tech's Andre Johnson, 9-5, before suffering his only loss of the week. He battled with #1 157-pounder Mike Poeta (Illinois) and even scored a takedown on the Illini grappler. Poeta is undefeated on the season.
Rivera was unphased and finished the tournament strong, winning his next two bouts. He dropped UVA's Kyle Artusio, 2-1, and finished his week with a 3-2 victory over Pat Lahman of Kent State.
The redshirt freshman helped ODU score three blowout victories this week. ODU dropped Delaware State by winning all 10 bouts and handled Lock Haven and Virginia Tech by a count of nine bouts to one. He also helped ODU defeat Lock Haven and Kent State for the first time in program history.
The Monarchs take the mat again on Friday, January 18 for the CAA Duals. They are scheduled to face Sacred Heart at 6:00 pm to start.
