No. 23 Men's Tennis Upset, 4-3, By No. 61 Georgia State

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- The No. 23 Old Dominion men's tennis was upset by No. 61 Georgia State on Saturday at the indoor courts at Center Court Racket Club. The Monarchs, who fall to 18-6 overall, were edged out, 4-3.

The match began with Old Dominion taking the doubles point, but Georgia State came back to win four of the six singles matches to take the win.

Singles began with Georgia State pulling off an upset at No. 1 singles. No. 105 Martin Stiegwardt of Georgia State defeated ODU's No. 18 Harel Srugo, 6-2, 7-6 (7) to tie the match at 1-1.

The Panthers went up 2-1 after at No. 5 singles victory by Anze Cevka over Rodrigo Souza in three sets, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, but the Monarchs would take the next match to tie the game. Eidy Igarashi played his way to a win over Andres Arango at the No. 4 spot in a come from behind win, 4-6, 6-1, 7-5, to tie the match at 2-2.

Georgia State went up 3-2 following the No. 6 match. The Panthers Daniel Balog defeated Yakov Diskin, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to put Georgia State ahead once more.

No. 25 Henrique Cancado tied the match up again at No. 2 singles posting a come from behind 6-7 (5), 7-6 (6), 6-2 victory over Georgia State's Nejc Podkrajsek setting up a showdown at No. 3 singles to decide the match.

The Panthers' Mattias Skold took the first set from Alex Seleznev, 6-4, but the second year Monarch took the second set in a tie brak, 7-6 (4). However, Skold took the third set, 6-4, to clinch the win for Georgia State.

It is only the second time this season the Monarchs have posted back-to-back losses. Both times have been against ranked opponents. Old Dominion fell to Wake Forest and Duke back-to-back in the beginning of the spring dual match season.

The Old Dominion men's tennis team returns to the courts on Saturday, April 14 at East Carolina.
