Feb. 14, 2002
Norfolk, VA-The University of Maryland scored a late pin in the second-to-last bout of the evening to hold off host Old Dominion this evening, 22-15. The Terps improve to 10-3 overall while Old Dominion slips to 1-9.
With Maryland leading 16-12 with two matches remaining, Josh Weidman provided the winning points, pinning ODU's Ben Summerlin at the 5:40 mark of the 165 lb. bout.
Old Dominion went ahead early in the contest thanks to senior Jeff Rusak (#4 InterMat/ #4 AWN), who pinned Barry Stein at 184. After two Maryland decisions at 197 and 285 tied the match 6-6, ODU sophomore John Starkes (Chesapeake, VA) defeated Mike Lupa 5-3 to put the Monarchs ahead again, 9-6.
Maryland took a 16-9 lead with wins at 133, 141 and 149, only to have ODU come back with a decision at 157 by Jesse Pearce (Norfolk, VA). Weidman's pin effectively ended the match, however, despite freshman John Adams (Chesapeake, VA) putting three more points on the board for ODU at 174 to bring the final to 22-15.
Rusak improves to 25-0 and 10-0 in dual meets. CAA Rookie Wrestler of the Week John Adams improves to 10-8 overall, 4-1 duals.
Old Dominion will be back in action on Sunday, when they take on American and Franklin & Marshall in Washington, D.C.
