Cancado, Van Der Merwe Advance To Round Of 32 At ITA Mideast Regional

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Sophomore Henrique Cancado (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and senior Izak van der Merwe (Kempton Park, South Africa) each reached the Round of 32 at the Wilson/ITA Mideast Regional held by the University of North Carolina.
Van der Merwe, ranked ninth in the Preseason ITA Poll and the top seed in the tournament, received a first round bye. In the Round of 64, he defeated North Carolina State's Will Shaw 7-6 (3), 6-2. His opponent in the Round of 32 will be Jonathan Stokke from Duke. Stokke opened play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over UNC-Greensboro's Greg Levy.
Cancado's second round featured an upset of one of the tournament's seeded players. In the Round of 64, Cancado downed 17th seeded Brett Ross of Wake Forest, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. He had opened play with a two set, 6-3, 6-2, victory over East Tennessee's Fernando Fiuri. Cancado will face William & Mary's Stephan Ward in the Round of 32. Ward is coming off a 7-6(4), 6-3 upset over ninth seeded Peter Rodrigues from Duke.
Sophomore Nate Grover (Suffolk, Va.) was also among Old Dominion's participants in the main draw. Grover fell in his first round match, a 7-5, 6-4 loss to Duke's Stefan Rozcyki.
In doubles play, the fifth seeded tandem of Van der Merwe and Grover are in the Round of 16. The duo received a first round bye and then picked up a Round of 32 victory over Hampton's Seo-Jae Chang and Alin Zolina-Ditoni, 8-4. The Preseason ITA Poll's 26th ranked team will face William & Mary's Sean Kelleher and Stephen Ward in the Round of 32.
