NORFOLK, Va. - The No. 8 Old Dominion University field hockey had their seven-game win streak snapped on Friday evening at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex as they fell to No. 6 Maryland, 5-2.
The loss snaps a seven-game win streak for Old Dominion (10-4) and is also the first regular season win for Maryland (10-3) over the Lady Monarchs since 2010.
The Terps scored almost immediately as Maxine Fluharty scored one of her two goals on the day when she slid the ball past ODU redshirt senior goalkeeper Marla Petriello at the 1:03 mark to give Maryland a quick 1-0 lead.
Old Dominion responded to tie the game up a few minutes later when redshirt sophomore Nicole Goff took the ball from the end line past multiple Maryland defenders and eventually past UM goalie Natalie Hunter on the left side.
ODU took a 2-1 lead midway through the first half when sophomore Rosario Villagra scored for the ninth time this season when she was wide open behind Hunter from five yards out and put it in to make it 2-1.
Maryland would put the defensive clamps on ODU from that point forward as the Terps eventually found the equalizer just before half when Janessa Pope rebounded in a shot off a penalty corner to tie the contest up at halftime.
In the second half, UM again scored quickly, this time in the 41st minute when Megan Frazer cut through the middle of the circle and past the ODU defense and put the ball in the cage on a cross from Fluharty. Sarah Sprink would make it 4-2 after a rebound in the 57th minute.
The Lady Monarchs didn't earn their first penalty corner of the game until late in the second half and could not capitalize. With under a minute to go, the Terps would score again off a rebounded shot on a penalty corner when Fluharty scored for the second time in the game.
UM outshot ODU, 21-5, and had the 9-2 advantage in penalty corners. Hunter had two saves for the Terps while Petriello had 10 saves for the Lady Monarchs.
Old Dominion closes out a six-game homestand on Sunday as they take on Duke at 1 p.m. at the L.R. Hill Sports Complex.
