Monarchs Set To Host Chowan In 2009 Season Opener
Jan. 16, 2008
Norfolk, Va. - Old Dominion University Athletic Director Dr. Jim Jarrett and head football coach Bobby Wilder announced today that the Monarchs will host the Hawks of Chowan University on Sept. 5 in the 2009 season opener. When the two teams take the field it will be the first time in 69 years for the Monarchs who last fielded a team in 1940.
"This is a good opening game for ODU football," says Jarrett. "Their athletic director Dennis Helsel, who is a former assistant athletic director for us, has been very cooperative throughout this process and we appreciate his support in getting this game. The game should generate local interest in addition to being our opener, due to Chowan's proximity to Hampton Roads."
Located in Murfreesboro, N.C., Chowan is a Division II program under the direction of third-year head coach Lorick Atkinson who took over in 2005. Chowan will begin playing football as a member of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) in 2008.
"I'm excited to have this opening game set," added Wilder. "This will be the first ODU football game at Foreman Field in 69 years and with Chowan being just an hour down the road, I'm sure the atmosphere will be great."
The Monarchs will close out the 2009 campaign on Nov. 21 with a trip to Florida where they'll face the Dolphins of Jacksonville University. This is the Monarchs' second opponent from the Pioneer League with ODU scheduled to meet Georgetown on Oct. 31.
"The addition of Jacksonville to the schedule gives us four quality Football Championship Subdivision (formerly I-AA) opponents," says Wilder. "This will be first contest in a home-and-home series with them visiting Foreman Field in 2010.
