Monarchs Open Wrestling Season by Dominating Old Dominion Invitational

NORFOLK - The Old Dominion Wrestling Team got off to a good start as they caputred first place finishes in eight weight classes to come out on top in the team standings. The Monarchs gave up championships in only the 125 and 197 weight brackets; UNC-Pembroke, who placed second, overall, won both.

Freshman Mike Davis (133, Herndon, VA), and Donald Motley (141, Chesapeake, VA), both introduced themselves to the home mat by placing first in their brackets. Benefiting from experience while winning their weights were Seniors Derrell Lorthridge (285, Wilmington, DE), Dennis Whiby (149, Lanoke Harbor, NJ), and Jesse Pearce (157, Norfolk, VA), Junior John Adams (165, Warrenton, VA), and Sophomores Matt Ulrey (174, St. Mary's, MI), and Adam Wright (184, Dayton, VA). Freshman Andy Lacroix (125, Salem, NH) took second in his first outing with ODU.

Former Monarch wrestlers Jeff Rusak '02 and Jamie Kelly '98 returned to their home mats for the first time as assistant coaches.

The Monarchs next compete in the Carolina Open in Chapel Hill, NC on December 6.
