Varsity and Frosh/Novice Fours To Race Knecht Cup Grand Final

CHERRY, HILL, N.J. - The Old Dominion women's rowing team will send a pair of boats to the Grand Finals of the Knecht Cup. The Lady Monarchs' Varsity Four and Frosh/Novice Four will each vie for medals in Sunday's races.

The Varsity Eight will be racing in the Petite Final on Sunday, while the members of the Second Varsity Eight will be competing in the Third Finals.

The Varsity Four dominated its quarterfinal heat with a first place finish 19 seconds ahead of second place Temple to advance to the semifinal heats. In the semifinals, the Varsity Four took second place to advance to Sunday's Grand Final. While Villanova won the semifinal heat in a time of 7:48.06, Old Dominion was not far behind with a time of 7:52.47, a solid 14 seconds ahead of third place Boston College.

The Frosh/Novice Four also dominated its quarterfinal heat and captured another first place finish in the semifinals to advance to the Grand Finals as well. The Lady Monarchs crossed the finish line in a time of 8:20.73 in the quarterfinals with a 33-second margin of victory. ODU then edged out Villanova's top Frosh/Novice Four boat by less than three seconds in the semifinals.

The Varsity Eight won its quarterfinal heat and took third in its semifinal appearance to reach the Petite Finals. Old Dominion rowed its way to a top time of 6:47.77, four seconds ahead of Temple's entry in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, the Lady Monarchs were featured in a tight head with the top four boats in the heat within three seconds of each other. Wisconsin claimed first in a time of 6:40.81, followed by Dayton in a time of 6:43.28, and Old Dominion in third crossing the finish with a time of 6:44.21. West Virginia was fourth with its time of 6:44.70.

The Second Varsity Eight placed fourth in its first race on Saturday. The quarterfinal heat saw Old Dominion row to a finish in 7:06.31, with Boston College topping the heat, and Temple and Holy Cross ahead of the Lady Monarchs. The ODU boat did advance as the top three in each heat advanced to the semifinals along with the next three fastest time, which included the Lady Monarchs. In the semifinals, ODU placed fifth and will row in the Third Finals on Sunday.
