Men's Tennis Falls To Georgia State In CAA Tennis Final

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. - Fourth-seeded Georgia State pulled off its second-straight upset of the weekend to garner its first-ever CAA Men's Tennis Championship, defeating second-seeded Old Dominion, 4-2, at Huntington Park Tennis Center Sunday afternoon.
Georgia State came back to claim the doubles point after Old Dominion's Harel Srugo and Henrique Cancado topped Martin Stiegwardt and Anze Cevka, 8-1, in the number one double. Andres Arango and Augusto Alvarado evened the doubles matches with an 8-5 win over ODU's Rodrigo Souza and Dom Manilla at the third spot before the Panthers' Nejc Podkrajsek and Mattias Skold provided the comeback. The duo was down as much as 5-2 and 6-3 to ODU's Alex Seleznev and Eidy Igarashi, prior to claiming an 8-6 win at number two as well as the doubles point for Georgia State.
The Panthers' Cevka extended the Georgia State lead to 2-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win at number five over Souza, but Old Dominion evened it up with two of its own singles wins. Cancado knocked off Podkrajsek at number two, 6-2, 6-3 and Igarashi claimed a 7-5, 6-1 win over Arango at number four. The Panthers pushed back in front, 3-2, with a three-set win at number one by Stiegwardt. The Quito, Equador, native fell in the first set to Old Dominion's Srugo, 1-6, then came back to win 6-3, 6-1, just as the remaining two matches headed into a third set.
Nearly an hour after Stiegwardt ended his match, GSU's Daniel Balog came away with a 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win over Yakov Diskin to clinch the match at number six and the championship for Georgia State.
The Monarchs, ranked 32nd in the ITA Poll, will now await the NCAA team bracket selection show May 1 to see if they garner an at-large bid. Individual singles and doubles teams selected to compete in the NCAA Championships will be announced a day later on May 2.
