No. 14 - 17 SMU Defeats ODU, 2-0 In Season Opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA--Arthur Ivo and Manuel Mariel scored second half goals to lead the SMU Mustangs to a 2-0 victory over Old Dominion Friday afternoon in the UVA Soccer Classic. SMU ranks 17th by the NSCAA/adidas and 14th by SOCCER AMERICA, ODU was 27th in the pre-season by COLLEGE SOCCER NEWS. This was the season opener for both teams.

After a scoreless first half, Ivo got a one-touch cross from the left side by Dan Saintusto give SMU a 1-0 lead in the first minute of the second half. Manuel then scored from 12 yards out With an assist from Paulo Da Silva.

ODU had three shots on the day from Ambane Emmanuel (Cameroon), Robert Sgueglia (Schenectady, NY.) and T. J. Beaulieu (Apex, NC.). Freshmen keeper Michael Roura made his first collegiate start and had four saves on the day for the Monarchs. ODU is playing without pre-season All-CAA goalkeeper Evan Newton who broke the head of the radius on his left elbow in an exhibition against Virginia last weekend.

The Monarchs return to action in Charlottesville on Sunday when they meet St. John's at 2:30 p.m.
