Defending National Champions Open 2001 Campaign

NORFOLK, VA.-- The defending National Champion Old Dominion University Field Hockey squad opens the 2001 campaign this weekend at Michigan State and Michigan.

The Lady Monarchs will play Michigan State Saturday at 1 p.m., then travel to Ann Arbor to take on Michigan on Sunday at 1 p.m. The Wolverines are pre-season ranked fourth by HOCKEY POINT, while Old Dominion edged out North Carolina for the top pre-season spot.

Old Dominion was 25-1 last year, winning their ninth NCAA title with a 3-1 decision over North Carolina. Leading the Lady Monarch returnees is first team All- American defender Adrienne Yoder (Coopersburg, PA.) and goaltender Marybeth Freeman (Holland, PA.). Gone from the Lady Monarchs lineup by way of graduation is the NCAA's All-time scorer and Honda Award winner Marina DiGiacomo (Medonza, Argentina.

The Lady Monarchs first home game will be Saturday, Sept. 1 against Maryland.
