NORFOLK, Va. – For the second straight week, the No. 14 Old Dominion University coed sailing team won a race to open up the 2012-13 season.

Last week on the Elizabeth River, ODU won the Riley Cup to start off the season. This week in nearby Hampton, the Monarchs dominated the competition in the Edward Teach Memorial race. Solid winds and comfortable temperatures dominated Saturday but no races could be run on Sunday due to lack of wind.

ODU’s A-team, which featured freshmen skipper Joe David and crew Grace Mason finished in first by a wide margin with 37 points. In the B-team race, junior skipper Rachel Austin and freshman crew Larissa Bellavia won by a solid margin as well with 36 points. ODU’s overall score of 74 points was 78 point ahead of second place Christopher Newport.

Also in action this weekend in Kings Point, N.Y., the Nevins Trophy race was going on. ODU finished in ninth overall out of 20 teams with 466 points. In the A-team race, senior skipper Dillon Paiva along with split crew of junior Chloe Constants and freshman Cooper Paiva struggled a bit as they finished 11th with 158 points. In the B-team race, freshman skipper Esteban Forrer and junior crew Julia Wiesner placed seventh with 134 points. Junior Evan Hoffmann placed 12th with 174 points in the C-team race.

In the Mrs. Hurst Bowl at Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H., the Lady Monarchs took seventh in the 22-team field. Junior skipper Corina Radtke and senior crew Shannon Wilkins took eighth with 120 points in the A-team race while sophomore skipper Andrea Luna and junior crew Alexa Cavalieri placed ninth in the B-team division race.

A busy weekend comes up for ODU as the MAISA Laser Qualifier takes place in Kings Point, N.Y. while the MAISA Women’s Singlehanded Championships will take place in Annapolis, Md. The St. Mary’s Open will also be going on next weekend.
