Monarchs Head North For CAA Play
Oct. 18, 2002
The Old Dominion men's soccer team will continue their Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) schedule this weekend as they travel north to take on Delaware tonight and Towson on Sunday.
The Monarchs are 11-1-3 in regular season conference matchups since 2000, including a 2-0 start this year. This will be the first meeting for ODU against these teams as conference foes since both Towson and Delaware are in their first year of soccer competition in the CAA.
After a 5-0 victory over UNC-Wilmington and 2-1 2OT win over George Mason, ODU (5-4-0/2-0-0) has moved into first place in the CAA. They hope to continue their streak as they face Delaware and Towson this weekend. The Monarch offense is lead by Attila Vendegh (Bratislava, Slovakia) who broke the school record for most career goals with his 37th against GMU. Vendegh is tied for 14th in the nation for points per game with 2.22 and assists per contest with just under one. He has seven goals and six assists so far in 2002.
Delaware has lost four of their five meetings with ODU, with their last win coming way back in 1976. The Monarchs have outscored UD 13-2 in their last four meetings. The Blue Hens (2-7-2/0-1-0) lost their first ever CAA game to Drexel, 2-0, and have only one win in their past 10 contests.
Towson is 6-3-2/1-0-1 after a 2-1 conference win over Drexel and a 1-1 tie with Hofstra. The Monarchs are 5-3 lifetime against the Tigers but the teams haven't met since 1995 when Towson dropped ODU 1-0. Machel Millwood is one of the best conference scorers with seven goals and nine assists. On defensive side, Andy Hicks averages less than one goal per game in 11 starts.
