Toni Bickford enters her second season as associate head coach of the ODU women's tennis program.
In her first season at ODU, Bickford helped lead the Lady Monarchs to a 13-10 overall record and advance to the semifinals of the CAA Tournament.
Three Lady Monarchs earned all-conference honors, including CAA Co-Rookie of the Year in Aleksandra Mitrovska. Diana Ivanova earned first team honors while Melissa Esnal Olguin earned third-team accolades. Ivanova and Esnal Olguin teamed up for All-CAA doubles honors as well.
Bickford joied the Lady Monarchs after a three-year stint as an assistant coach at William and Mary. Bickford helped lead W&M to the CAA Championship this past season as the Tribe earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament. She was named the 2011 ITA Atlantic Region Assistant Coach of the Year.
"Toni will be an invaluable asset to the programs goal of becoming a top 25 contender," Manilla said. "Her success as a recruiter at Iowa and then William and Mary made her a clear choice for the job. I am excited to see what she will bring to the table."
Before heading to W&M, Bickford was an assistant coach at Iowa for six years, helping the Hawkeyes to three NCAA Tournament appearances.
Bickford enjoyed an outstanding career as a student-athlete at Iowa, becoming the first four-time All-Big Ten honoree. She was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year in 1999 and earned two NCAA Tournament bids in doubles and as a senior was the first ever Iowa women's tennis player to earn a trip to the NCAA singles tournament.
"Toni not only has a reputation for being a solid recruiter but possess a successful track record of developing and growing student-athletes, academically and athletically," Associate Athletic Director Bruce Stewart said. "I am elated she has chosen to become a part of the Monarch family."
