NORFOLK, VA (September 24) - Sophomore midfielder Sarah Hirst (Virginia Beach, VA) scored her first goal as a Lady Monarch in the 34th minute to lead Old Dominion over Florida International, 1-0. Old Dominion improves to 5-3-0 on the season, while FIU falls to 3-4-1.

Hirst's goal came at the 33:50 mark as she blasted a shot into the left center part of the net from fifteen yards out on Kristen Murray's (Wappingers Falls, NY) assist. The Lady Monarchs took the 1-0 lead into the half leading in the shots on goal category, 5-4.

In the second half, neither team was able to generate offense as the game was played in the midfield for the majority of the half. The Lady Monarchs were held without a shot in the second half until under three minutes left in the game, when junior defender Theresa Carrubba (Brentwood, NY) got off two and sophomore forward Jen Henley (Chalfont, PA) launched one.

The Panthers best opportunity to score came midway through the first half as the Lady Monarchs were caught with an open net, but Michele O'Brien's shot was high and right.

Old Dominion finished the game leading in shots, 8-5, and corners, 8-3.

Lady Monarch goalkeeper Tonya Dedmond (North Potomac, MD) recorded two saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

Old Dominion returns to action Wednesday, September 29, as the team travels to Greenville, NC, to take on CAA-rival East Carolina at 4 pm.
